Welcome to the initial website for Independent Housing Initiative! In these pages, we plan to share our vision and mission and plans for a Jewish-inspired residential community for adults with intellectual, developmental, and/or physical disabilities to be located just north of Milwaukee.
The most important messages about our organization can be found on our Home Page, plus for any self-advocate or their family who have an interest in living in our planned community, we have included a simple way to add your name to our Residential Interest List.
Under the About tab, you can read the backstory to how we became inspired to take on such an important, but sizeable, commitment. The culture we hope to imbue in the community will be driven by our Guiding Principles, and we invite you to get to know our Board of Directors as well as our Consultants and Advisors.
An early look at what we are considering building depending on the land we are able to secure can be viewed under Residential. Later this year, we will convene focus groups of self-advocates, families, and funders to propose our initial plans for discussion and feedback. It is important to us that the voices of individuals with disabilities and their families are authentically considered in our plans.
We know there will be many questions from self-advocates, families, guardians, and other interested parties. We have tried to capture the initial tranche under our FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) section and we plan to update and expand that section as we get more questions and requests for information.
